What is SSH?

SSH (Secure Shell) is a network protocol used to securely connect to a remote computer over an insecure channel. It allows users to execute commands on a remote machine, effectively acting as a bridge between local and remote systems.

Do you provide SSH?

Yes, we provide SSH access for our hosting customers. You can use SSH to manage your hosting account, files, and databases securely.

How to get an SSH client

To connect to your hosting account via SSH, you need an SSH client application. Here are some popular options:

  • Command-line tools: ssh (Linux/macOS) or psftp (Windows)
  • Graphical clients: PuTTY (Windows), FileZilla (cross-platform)

How to use SSH keys

For added security, we recommend using SSH keys instead of passwords. Here's how:

  1. Generate an SSH key pair:
    $ ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096

  2. Save the public key to your account on our platform.
  3. Use the private key to connect via ssh -i /path/to/private.key username@host.

How to create/edit files via SSH

  1. To create a new file:
    $ ssh username@host "mkdir new_folder && echo 'New file' > new_file.txt"

  2. To edit a file:
    $ ssh username@host "vim /path/to/file.txt"

How to manage file permissions

  1. Change file ownership:
    $ ssh username@host "chmod 755 filename"

  2. Set read-only permissions:
    $ ssh username@host "chattr +r /path/to/readonly_file"

How to create a backup of your files

  1. Use scp to copy files:
    $ scp filename user@host:/path/to/backup/

  2. Or use rsync for syncing changes:
    $ rsync -avz /local/path/ user@host:/remote/path/

How to connect to a remote database

  1. Use mysql or psql:
    $ ssh username@host "mysql -u dbname -p"

  2. Or use ssh tunneling for secure connections.

How to transfer files using SCP/SFTP

  • SCP (Secure Copy Protocol):
    $ scp filename user@host:/path/to/destination/

  • SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol):
    $ sftp -P username@host:/path/to/destination/
