A Certificate Signing Request (CSR) is a digital certificate that allows you to request an SSL/TLS certificate from a Certificate Authority (CA). This process is essential if you want to secure your website with an SSL certificate. Below, we'll guide you through generating a CSR on ISPConfig.
Introduction
A CSR is required when applying for an SSL certificate. It contains information about your domain and server, which the CA uses to issue the certificate. By following these steps, you can generate a CSR for your domain using ISPConfig.
Steps to Generate a CSR
1. Log in to Your ISPConfig Account
- Open your web browser and navigate to your ISPConfig control panel.
- Enter your credentials (username and password) to log in.
2. Navigate to the Domain Management Section
- Once logged in, go to the domain you want to secure with an SSL certificate.
- Look for the section related to SSL/TLS certificates or CSR generation.
3. Fill Out the CSR Fields
- Provide the following information:
- Domain: Enter your main domain (e.g.,
example.com).
- Domain Alias (Optional): If you want a wildcard certificate, enter
* here.
- Common Name (CN): This is the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of your server.
- Organization Name: The legal entity or company name.
- Organizational Unit (OU): Department or division within the organization.
- City, State, and Country: Your server's location details.
- Email Address: The contact email for the certificate request.
4. Generate the CSR
- After filling out all required fields, scroll down to the bottom of the page.
- Select the "Create Certificate" option from the dropdown menu in the SSL Action section.
- Click the "Save" button to save your CSR.
5. Extract the CSR Code
- Locate the CSR code in the SSL Request field.
- Copy the entire content between the tags
-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE REQUEST----- and -----END CERTIFICATE REQUEST-----.
Important Notes
- Backup Your CSR: Save the CSR code securely, as it is essential for obtaining your SSL certificate.
- Domain vs. Wildcard Certificates: If you need a wildcard certificate (covering subdomains like
www.*, *.example.com), select the appropriate option in the Domain field.
