A URL redirect is a technique used to forward users from one web page or domain to another. This process can be useful for several reasons, such as moving websites, redirecting old links to new locations, or improving site navigation.

What Are URL Redirects?

  • Definition: A URL redirect involves changing the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) of a web page so that users are directed to a different location.
  • Purpose: This technique is commonly used during website migrations, domain changes, or when updating old links to point to new content.

Types of URL Redirects

There are two main types of redirects:

  1. 301 Permanent Redirect

    • Definition: A 301 redirect is a permanent redirection, meaning the user will always be forwarded to the new location.
    • Use Case: Typically used for domain name changes or when a website is moved to a new URL.
  2. 302 Temporary Redirect

    • Definition: A 302 redirect is temporary and can be set to expire after a certain period of time.
    • Use Case: Useful for situations where the content will be available temporarily, such as during maintenance or redirects due to a bug.

  • URL Frames: These allow additional parameters to be included in the redirect, useful for maintaining URLs with query strings.
